The Judicial Appointment Process

When a judge retires before the end of their judicial term, a qualified judge must be appointed to fill their role.

Candidates are nominated, and all the Forsyth County Lawyers vote to send the most qualified candidates to be considered by the Governor's Office.

The names of the candidates with the most votes of their peers, based upon their reputation and experience are sent to Governor Stein.

The Details of Judge McDonald's Selection Process

In October 2025, the Forsyth County Bar asked for nominations to fill the vacant judicial seat. Eleven lawyers submitted their names, resumes, recommendations, and video statements to be considered and voted upon by their peers. Cheryl Andrews McDonald and her opponent in the primary were among those considered.

All the lawyers in Forsyth County voted. Cheryl Andrews McDonald was in the top three of vote recipients. Her opponent in the primary did not receive enough votes from her colleagues to be considered by the Governor.

The Governor's office vetted and performed several rounds of interviews of the qualified candidates.

After weeks of interviews, Governor John Stein selected Cheryl Andrews McDonald as the most qualified candidate and appointed her as Judge Cheryl Andrews McDonald.
